  • AST Presents: Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche

    Auburn, CA

AST Presents: Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche

In the early 1980’s, the Alpine Meadows Ski Patrol were the undisputed gods of winter in the mountain hamlet of Lake Tahoe, California, a sun-drenched wonderland of endless powder and parties. This sundry crew full of youthful hubris and a zest for explosives were guided by a newly minted avalanche forecaster named Jim Plehn. More thoughtful and strategic than the others, Jim was a stickler for safety and protocol; he had to be at this avalanche-prone resort. The responsibility to keep the skiing public safe was an all-consuming obsession of the patrol crew, which made the day of March 31,1982 all the more devastating.

Over the next five days, through an unrelenting storm and unimaginable tragedy, the rescue team persevered. Innocence was lost, mortality faced, Mother Nature reckoned with, but through it all they never gave up hope for a miracle.

AST Presents: Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss: Together at Last

Kathy Mattea and Suzy Bogguss have each carved out careers in popular music with country chart hits spanning two decades. Suzy’s “Outbound Plane”, “Aces”, and “Someday Soon” are among the many songs beloved by country music fans around the world, as are “Where’ve You Been?”, “455 Rocket”, and “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” from Kathy’s deep well of material.

Friends since their early days in Nashville, they had only found a few opportunities to collaborate musically, notably with “Teach Your Children”, their Grammy-nominated track from 1994’s “Red, Hot + Country” compilation. • AST Presents: Mick Martin’s Blues Rockers (Katie Knipp Opening)

    Auburn, CA

AST Presents: Mick Martin’s Blues Rockers (Katie Knipp Opening)

Leading this dynamic show is Northern California Blues Americana Siren Katie Knipp, equipped with powerful vocals and playing a variety of instruments – from boogie woogie piano to slide guitar, with honest harmonica-laden stories in between. Following this opening act is Mick Martin, who has been producing and hosting the Blues for more than 25 years, beginning with “The KZAP Blues Show” in August of 1989. He joined the staff of KXJZ in July 1991 to create “Mick Martin’s Blues Party,” each week presenting a fresh, no-repeat blues program: new releases by blues artists, classic releases placed in a historical or thematic context and album tracks by performers whose handful of best-known songs are played to death on rock radio. “I call it the antidote to the ‘music of your life’ approach,” Martin says, “Don’t get me wrong, hits are hits for a reason, but what about all the other great music made by popular artists that are seldom, if ever, heard?”

  • Auburn Symphony Presents: “Masterworks III: Musical Portraits”

Auburn Symphony Presents: “Masterworks III: Musical Portraits”

Belonging to the stars, the atmospheric masterpiece “Sidereus” showcases the sparkle of the orchestra and is one of the most popular pieces for orchestra written in the last twenty years! With “Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Op. 107” Shostakovich stamped his musical initials right into this piece.  You will hear the DSCH theme throughout all of the movements of this powerful and driving masterpiece. Elgar’s “Enigma Variations Op. 36” was composed in fourteen variations to represent the composer’s friends, family – and even himself.  One of music’s most touching and sentimental pieces, to this day we still don’t know the secret theme Elgar based these variations on – maybe you can solve the enigma!

AST Presents: Duo Quartet with Chris Webster, Nina Gerber, Pam Delgado & Jeri Jones

There is something richly satisfying in experiencing these four women onstage with a dynamic ranging from tender, ethereal songs to raucous barn-burners. Webster and Delgado sing most of the leads – Chris often expertly playing a washboard while Delgado drives the band with her percussion. But if this were a boxing ring you’d see coming in from opposite corners, the dueling energy of Jones and Gerber egging each other on – whipping the band and the audience into a veritable frenzy.
